If your children are not taking summer piano lessons, will they still touch the piano?
Do you know the weeks or even months that they don't practice the piano, it takes double or even triple the time to pick up again when they resume lessons in September? This is sometimes called the Summer Slides....
When they come back to lessons in September, their fingers technique is all falling apart and is feeling bored to redo some of the older pieces because they don't know how to play them anymore...
So instead of wasting the summer time, give them a practice challenge. Summer is actually a good time to pick up piano practicing because no more homework and school pressures, their focuses can be onto piano and the activities they decided to do. I see a lot of students who continue to practice during summer have better success in the future years of piano learning.
If your children are taking summer piano lesson, you have made the best choice, they will continue their practice routine.
If your children are taking time off, how do you help them to keep up?
1) Set a time each week for piano practicing.
Of course it is desired to practice daily as usual, but I understand they might have signed up many camps...etc...still, weekly practice will give you surprising results.
2) Mini recital with cousins, friends...
Give them a chance or "challenge" to play in front of friends, families...That way can definitely push them to practice before playing in front of others.
3) Go to concert
Keep them musically motivated. There are lots of local music concerts, recitals that you can find. What about choosing a rainy day to go to concerns to see how others are doing?
Hope to see those students who took summer off from piano lessons are also well prepared in September! Enjoy the sunshine!
