Do you know how to practice?
In the previous article, I have shared with you 2 main points to help on practicing piano.
In this article, I am going to talk about Effective practice.
Everyone knows practicing is essential to master a skill, not only for piano learning, but HOW?
Again the atmosphere, your mindset plays a big role! What else?
A few things you should keep in mind.
1) Have a plan. Set goals. What do you want to achieve? For example, "by next Tuesday, I will play this passage with no notes mistakes." Be measurable on that.
2) Focus one task at a time. Do not always start practicing a piece from the beginning. Try different places to start (your starting point). Some students have issues in memorizing the piece, and always need to go back to the beginning to start again when they have made mistakes.
3) Do warm up exercise. Warm up your fingers with one scale, that won't take a lot of time. It is like you need to warm up your body before going to swim. Your fingers need that too.
4) Practice slowly. Not many students can do this one, especially for the young ones, because they are too excited to learn the new piece. However, this is crucial to start slowly. Play hand separately first, know the melody and when ready, put hands together slowly. Keep in mind, it is easier to do it right the first time, it takes double or even triple your time to correct your mistakes.
5) Analyse your piece. This is for more advanced students. Analyzing a piece does not mean you need to sit in front of the piano. You can listen to the recording, "read" the score, know the pattern of the piece, understand the chords and keys, etc...
Hope you find this helpful! Remember, no pianist can play piano well without any hard work!
